SCOPE

Melcar was contracted to install a 60”, 0.750” thick steel casing under Huntingdon Valley Creek as part of the ongoing project to upgrade the existing 22” steel water main to a new 36” steel water main to improve water service to the area.

CHALLENGES

Installing a 60" steel gas main via auger bore under a creek presents significant challenges as the pipe size demands specialized equipment and precise alignment to ensure pinpoint accuracy to keep the main on grade. Working under an active creek adds complexity, as there’s an increased risk of inadvertent returns into the creek as well as the need to work at an increased depth to maintain clearance under the creek. On top of the normal challenges of working with pipe this size at deeper depths than normal, local jurisdictions mandated that the schedule had to be compressed to minimize the impact to traffic along the always busy Philmont Ave.

SUCESS FACTORS/OUTCOMES

Our crews demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication throughout the installation of the 60" steel casing, working multiple crews around the clock to ensure the project stayed on track without compromising quality or safety. Despite the inherent challenges of such a large-diameter bore, they maintained pinpoint accuracy from entry to exit, showcasing the precision and professionalism that sets our team apart. Through careful planning, constant communication of handoffs between shifts, and expert operation of specialized auger bore equipment, they executed each phase flawlessly. The successful completion of this complex bore without environmental incidents or alignment issues stands as a testament to the crew’s commitment, technical expertise, and tireless work ethic.
